JARREAU VANDAL WHAT YOU SAYING?

When Dutch producer Jarreau Vandal and London artist TĀLĀ stepped into the studio some months back, one of their first conversations centred around the vibes you subconsciously emit when you’re single. As Vandal explains, “'What You Saying?' was made during a studio session that was set up by my management. Before we even started working on any music we had a conversation about how whenever you get single everybody seems to notice that you are single and seems to hit on you. And that’s kind of what the song is about." After this first meeting, cheeky pop banger with its eye-wink of a title, ‘What You Saying?’, was born. It’s a rhythm first kind of track with steel pan drums, rattling trap, and tempo keeping clicks all playing forward, and TĀLĀ’s sing-speak vocals slot perfectly into this articulated track. It’s not one to be taken too seriously - it’s all about casual hookups, flirting and enjoying the single life after all, and that carefree attitude is taken right through to Vandal’s multi-textual production and innuendo-heavy sexy-time interlude. The beatmaker’s Anthology mixtape is full of twilighted pop jams for your weekend - ‘What You Saying?’ is definitely one of them. - Hannah Thacker
