HANNAH FRANCES FALLING FROM AND FURTHER

On her new single ‘Falling From And Further’, Vermont-based singer-songwriter Hannah Frances navigates disorganised attachment with a striking, genre-fluid take on contemporary folk. Frances describes the new track as “…a door into my next musical  chapter, achieving the poignant vulnerability, grounded whimsy, and measured experimentalism that I strive for in my work.” She leaps through this door with a lightness, casting out each line with a rich, unshakeable cadence and honeyed, steel-toned acoustics. While the first minute of the track captures a graciously unhurried poise, her steady strums fall into a pattern of brisk fingerpicking as drums sprint in a brief euphoric spurt. It slows for the integration of a saxophone motif, only for a moment, before the instrumentation veers in unpredictable directions, melding folk, jazz, and post-rock with Frances at the centre. It works metaphorically, as the song focuses on the fear of abandonment and the tumultuous nature of attachment. ‘Falling From And Further’ is a stirring introduction to Frances’ teased evolution, embracing vulnerability without descending into a loss of control — unsteady by design, yet more affecting for it. -Kayla Sandiford
