HANK BEE SFS

Hank Bee's EP a sudden hankering has arrived, and 'SFS' emerges as one of its most affecting moments. Built around a definitive piano line that carries the track from start to finish, the song moves with a quiet certainty, anchoring every emotional turn. The piano doesn’t simply accompany Hank Bee’s voice- it leads it, setting the tone for a ballad that feels both intimate and unavoidably honest. 'SFS' sits with themes of self-reckoning and the slow acceptance that time doesn’t automatically resolve everything. Lines like 'Tracing our footsteps, the mis-steps to bring us here' land with the weight of hindsight, while the recurring pull of morning suggests a cycle that can’t be ignored forever. Subtle flourishes, including a beautifully restrained flute part from Saffron Howells and layered harmonies, add texture without breaking the song’s stillness. Recorded 'on a whim' as a last-minute addition to the EP, the ballad originally began as a piano idea over 2 years ago. It lingered as an instrumental for nearly two years before Hank Bee finally found the words- a process she’s described as confronting the denial and avoidance that often block her from saying what she truly means. -Rachel Fryer
