FLOHIO WAY2
Flohio (a.k.a Fumi Ohio) is an upcoming British rapper from Bermondsey, South London. The first track we stumbled across was one of many collaborations, this one with electronic beat artist Modeselektor, and we've been hooked ever since. Flohio's voice is distinctly robust, cutting through the heavy production in her music, generating a dark, grimey kind of hip-hop. 'WAY2' is her freshest single, which opens up with haunting steel sounds that carry throughout the song and a hefty beat which utilising elements of trap in a non-conventional way. The sub-bass is booming and moody. Flohio is effortless and fearless when she MC's; spitting with such intensity, when she states "I do what I want for my sanity, / You do what they want like a slave, son." The BV's are distorted and delayed, adding a sense of agreement, revving up the song and intensifying her words. She raps with frustration and slight anger, adding to the authenticity of her sound. Flohio used music as a coping mechanism and an escape, she says “What I write about is where I was in the past, where I am now and where I see myself in the future,” and as she goes on to share, "I can’t rap about cars because I don’t have one, I don’t bust guns. I’m from south London so I rap a lot about my community." She's inspiring when talking about her own ambitions and values in her music career: “I want my music to take me all around the world – end of,” she concludes. “I want to get paid to make people happy and love each other." Hopefully, Flohio is an encouraging figure for other female MC's, because she really is bossing it. - Ellie Davies
