‘Insomnia’ is the new single from jazz-pop band Dance Lessons. Their mission is to blur the lines between pop and jazz, and the opening moments do exactly that. The pounding straight bass drum pattern and effortlessly catchy vocal line are as poppy as they come, but subtly unusual harmony, the syncopated groove of a bass and shifting, distant guitar rhythms show that not everything is as it seems. The chorus is almost operatic in scale, with layers of Kate Bush-esque vocals colliding with electronica, jazz, pop and just about everything else. Dance Lessons are dropping their debut album, Beginners, on July 25th, 2025. They say the album is designed to “trick people who say they don’t like jazz into really digging it. We think our music blends anything and everything that we love and would want to hear ourselves.” -Dan Peeke
