Connie Constance has returned with another politically-charged tune, this time in the form of the brilliant ‘James’. It’s unashamedly an anti-drug track, with her frank approach mostly avoiding metaphor and imagery in favour of telling everything like it is: “How do I tell this story without telling all?” she asks. “I couldn’t. How could I enjoy life without muting all my demons? On that precipice, it was intoxication that was an easy way to take the clouds and the rain out of focus. Or easier put, but just as poetic - Shits gets shitter? Dive into an ocean of narcotics.” Musically, she blurs jangly guitars with dreamy synths, and allows her distinctive voice to take centre stage. -Dan Peeke
