CLUB KURU GIVING IN

Club Kuru’s journey to becoming alt-funk aficionados sees no sign of letting up with the woozy, lo-fi wonder ‘Giving In’, which is now accompanied by an equally hazy music video. Compared to Laurie Erskine’s early days with R&B-dipped tracks like ‘All The Days’, his sound is barely recognisable and that’s down to the input of band members Graham Godfrey (co-producer and drummer), Fergus Ireland (bass), Laurence Hammerton (guitar) and Jess Berry (vocals), who have taken Club Kuru to a whole new realm of lackadaisical introspection. That inward-looking nature of Erskine’s “kuru” is the consistency here, as the charismatic frontman explains: "I was thinking of an old man looking back on his life and his relationships. The ménage à trois he still dreams of. The lost love and the bad choices he made,so this song's like a little snippet from his dreams and his nightmares. Where did he go wrong?" Through ‘Giving In’, Club Kuru further their affiliation with reverbed day-dreamers like Mac Demarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Nick Hakim and Connan Mockasin.  - HT
