CLARISSA CONNELLY WEE ROSEBUD
Freshly signed to Warp Records, joining a wealth of similarly pioneering artists on the roster, Scotland-born, Copenhagen-raised artist Clarissa Connelly makes a striking debut for the label with ‘Wee Rosebud’. Built atop of a descending vocal sequence, drawing on a haunting 16th Century lament, Connelly’s powerful lead vocals announce themselves confidently and with plenty of character. Embodying a developing flower, unfurling as it opens, the whimsical track feels ancient and modern at the same time as Connelly poetically taps into the anthropomorphic qualities of plants. With little to no musical accompaniment for the most part, Connelly's astonishing vocal performance sits front and centre, navigating tone, texture and volume with a masterful hand. Played out by simple nylon-stringed guitar strums (adding further to the medieval vibe), 'Wee Rosebud' is a memorable outing from a bold and talented musician. -Holly Mullineaux
