LIST PICK
CARMEL SMICKERSGILL QUESTIONING
Presented to us by the continually tantalising PRAH recordings, the new single by Manchester-based musician Carmel Smickersgill is a wonderfully intriguing listen. Appearing on our radar last year with the aptly titled 'Greeting', ‘Questioning’ is a dizzying piece of industrial-flavoured electronica that feels somewhat like a remix of Smickersgill’s own work. Also a member of the brilliant Bunny Hoova (see our List Pick for ‘Weak’ here) Smickersgill is no stranger to the off-kilter. Channelling elements of Aphex Twin and OTTO, ‘Questioning’ is still wildly original, as choppy vocal samples provide both rhythm and melody. Morphing substantially over its less than 3 minute duration, shiny horns (?) and uplifting arpeggios carry the initially dark work to a floaty finale. Listen here now. -Holly Mullineaux
