ALFI JACK OF DIAMONDS
Spellbinding trad-folk trio Alfi have shared their transportive new single 'Jack of Diamonds'. Comprised of previous TMR tip Alannah Thornburgh, The Pogues' pipes player Fiachra Meek and Ryan McAuley, Alfi's rendition of the historic track masterfully combines 5 string banjo, harp and low whistle. With each musician sitting at the very top of their game, rousing vocals anchor the start of the track, which meanders off into a luscious instrumental. The band explain: "Jack of Diamonds is a well-known traditional old-time ballad about a man who drinks and gambles away everything he has, yet remains satisfied with the life he leads. Our arrangement is inspired primarily by three versions: Tommy Jarrell’s The Drunken Hiccups/Jack of Diamonds, Bruce Molsky’s The Drunkard’s Hiccups/Jack of Diamonds, and Frank Proffitt’s Rye Whiskey. The song’s origins likely trace back to a family of related ballads sung in Scotland, Ireland, and England, brought to the United States in the late 1700s. The lyrics then evolved throughout the 1800s, leading to the narrative widely sung today." A comforting offering for these cold winter nights, 'Jack of Diamonds' is a welcome winter tonic from an accomplished and entirely original group of friends. -Holly Mullineaux
