AEROPLANE MODE WILD EXCUSES

Any band bold enough to name themselves after a setting on your phone is going to do alright in our books, and sure enough, New York duo Aeroplane Mode have the tune(s) to back up the abstract moniker. In fairness, there's a bit more to their naming than that, vocalist Jess Carvo and multi-instrumentalist Alex Marko began writing together by putting their blowers into aeroplane mode, shutting down from outside distractions and the relentless ebb and flow of social media. So there you go. The first result of those intimate experiences is 'Wild Excuses' - a tense, taut downtempo pop number which touches on the heartbreak and loss suffered by its writers over the past year. It's a stirring debut offering, but we have an inkling that there's even more to come from these two than the dark, fizzing synths and murky beats on display here. Watch this space. - DC
