LISTED

SQUID

In this ‘Listed’ feature, we get to know the most radicalist up-and-coming stars through a themed list of their top musical picks.

This time we snuggle up with Squid for their ultimate sleepover soundtrack.

Split between Brighton and London, exciting newcomers Squid have been making quite a splash with their frankly phenomenal Speedy Wunderground-released single 'The Dial'. Recorded in the space of a day in a smoky, laser-filled room with legendary producer Dan Carey 'The Dial' is a potent concoction of angular post-punk, dancey new-wave, chugging Krautrock and visceral yet playful vocals that come together to create one of our favourite tracks of the year so far. Exploding in a flurry of online praise, 'The Dial' also caught the attention of radio legend Steve Lamacq, who selected the track as his 'Lamacq Livener' as well as putting it forward for his infamous 'Roundtable' show, from which Squid emerged victorious over heavyweight rivals including Christine and the Queens, The Smashing Pumpkins and Steve Mason. With only a handful of promising early cuts including their meandering 'Terrestrial Changeover Blues (2007-2012)' online, Squid are only just getting warmed up and the future is looking blue.

SQUID SLEEPOVER

1. The Room OST – ‘I Will’

Ollie: “Poignant, pungent, repugnant? When you’re at the sleepover and your ex pulls up on a motorbike, holding a boombox, playing this. Too late. You had your chance. Plus, Tommy Wiseau's bare naked ASS… you kno”

2. Yves Tumor – ‘Limerence’

Ollie: “There’s something really beautiful about the voice clips over the top of this. There’s absolutely no context to it and Yves leaves it up to the listener to create a story around it. Putting the sound of rain and thunderstorms over an ambient track can be a bit gimmicky but it adds so much to the story of the track, that i’ve made up in my head”

3. Andrew Pekler – ‘Steady State’

Louis: “I love how this song builds on a single sweeping groove that eventually clutters the mix and finally returns to its original iteration, as if nothing had happened at all! It’s got a dream-sequence quality and has been the soundtrack to many of my Sunday dread bedtimes. But I still LOVE It.”

4. Eliane Radigue – ‘L'Île Re-Sonante’

Louis: “This piece is the most beautiful music I have ever heard. My Youtube top comment confirms this with a whopping 78 thumbs up and a broken ‘I’ Key on the laptop. The way she layers textures on top of each other into elongated sections is completely unique to Radigue, always seeing you through ‘til 7am. Try mixing with Steve Reich’s Octet. Is that Cheating?”

5. Olivier Alary – ‘Pulses (For Winds)’

Anton: “Gets pretty Philip Glassy after a minute or so but it’s much more earthy; Philip Sand?”

6. Matt Berry – ‘Music For Insomniacs’

Anton: “If you ever went to a sleepover and everyone else fell asleep after listening to high brow ambient music but you couldn’t, this one for you. Ray BLOODY Purchase!”

7. Jon Hassell – ‘Toucan Ocean’

Laurie: “Jon impersonates Toucans with his trumpet… or is it a synth… nobody knows…”

8. Thundercat – ‘Oh Sheit It’s X’

Laurie: “This has the sauciest animal sauce video you will have ever seen and the sauciest bass line to match”

9. FcKahuna – ‘Hayling’

Arthur: “I Heard this song in Layer Cake the movie.”

10. Bill Evans – ‘Nardis’

Arthur: “Because a squid sleepover would not be all fun and games. Also this song turns Louis on.”
