THE GREAT ESCAPE 2018: LISTED

DAMA SCOUT

In this ‘Listed’ feature, we get to know the most radicalist up-and-coming stars through a themed list of their top musical picks.

This time around, it’s Dama Scout who take control.

The danceable indie-punk bunch caught our eye last year with the spirited likes of ‘All In Too’ and ‘Paper Boy’ - early singles which showcased a captivating art-rock mentality, and landed them a place on TMR’s Top 20 of 2017. It’s recent single ‘Milky Milk’ that really bristles with the energy Dama Scout are quickly becoming known for, though.

A song “about making the most of fleeting happiness and accepting its irregularity”, the track brought a new edge to Dama Scout’s warped pop, and quickly landed itself a spot amongst early 2018’s best as it twisted and turned its way throughout a cinematic landscape of sound.

It’s somewhat fitting, then, that for Dama Scout’s ‘Listed’ feature, they’ve opted to take us to the movies. Dubbed the ‘REEL GOOD MUSIC’ playlist (punny, that), they’ve picked out their very best movie tracks - or, in their words, “music that helped justify paying upwards of £13 to sit in a chair someone may have recently farted on”. Dama Scout will play TMR and Hand In Hive’s stage at The Great Escape next Friday 18th May, in association with CALM - don’t miss it.

***

1. Harry Nilsson/Jon Brion - ‘He Needs Me’ from Punch Drunk Love

Dreamy and suitably unhinged.

2. Carl Orff - ‘Gassenhauer’ from Badlands

A playful and innocent motif contradicting the dark narrative of the film.

3. The Kinks - ‘Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl’ from Rushmore

It's Bill Murray jumping in a pool.

4. Goblin - Theme from Suspiria

Amazingly unsettling Italian prog.

5. Air - ‘Playground Love’ from Virgin Suicides

Beautiful and dreamy with an air of doom.

6. Rebekah Del Rio - ‘Llorando’ from Mulholland Drive

The most Lynchy moment ever.

7. Mica Levi - ‘Death’ from Under the Skin

Hazy and unnerving.

8. Oneohtrix Point Never feat. Iggy Pop - ‘The Pure and the Damned’ from Good Time

A serene finale to the previous madness.

9. George Martin - ‘Pepperland’ from Yellow Submarine

One of George Martin's magical orchestral pieces for the soundtrack. Pure biscuits.

10. John Barry - The Midnight Cowboy Theme

Sums up the mood perfectly - hopeful, naive and melancholy.

Catch Dama Scout at the Hand In Hive x TMR official Great Escape showcase on Saturday 19th May.
