YOUNG CLANCY O MY

Last year, Toronto’s Young Clancy caught the ear of many a tastemaker with his vulnerable R&B songs on debut EP Yung Prince of the Basement. Since then, the independent Canadian artist has been back in his homegrown studio to cook up more deliciously smooth R&B productions. His first release of 2018 is ‘O My’, which is part of a compilation currently for sale on Bandcamp as a charity track to raise money for J2K, a youth drop-in centre in Montreal where kids can go to learn and create music. Not only does buying this track make you feel like a good human being, but you’re also getting a sweet new tune flush with gospel keys, romantic guitars, a seductive bassline and songwriting that further taps into the trials of emotion. ‘O My’ is a soulful, downtempo number until about 2:13 and then Young Clancy’s remix skills come into play with a Jamie xx-style synth and back-and-forth beats. Rather than taking that until the end, Young Clancy sweeps back with that burning electric guitar. It’s a song full of variety, one that’s making us hopeful for more tracks from this promising Toronto newcomer. -HT
