WIT BLU CRYSTALLIZE

Towards the end of last year, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Wit Blu released two tracks ‘Broken Clock’ and ‘Love’s Not Enough’ which introduced her sugary, R&B voice and affection for electronic beats. In a way, those earlier tracks are almost demos compared to newest release ‘Crystallize’. Her voice is still the focal point, as she addresses a lost lover with the velvety, mellow tone and yet we’re also drawn to the punchy electronics, slow-dance rhythm and a simple but effective synthesised piano melody. Those keys are courtesy of L.A.-via-London producer Lex Low, who appears to bring out the best Wit Blu, who tells us about their studio session: “He started with the key progression you hear in the intro while I sang along trying out different ideas. I ended up putting together a chorus and verse from 2 different songs I had written previously and we reworked them in and elaborated. The mashup of the two songs and production came together effortlessly and had the perfect vibe.” It’s certainly that effortless feel that we appreciate in ‘Crystallize’, a song that never exerts itself, although we can hear that bpm subtly rising in the chorus through which Wit Blu serenely sings. - HT
