TREASURESEASON BLURRED EDGES

Recently, we reviewed Treasureseason’s ‘The Rush’, an impressive single built on “chilled instrumentation and stylish lo-fi production”, plus highly emotive lyrical content. Today, the pairing of David Powell and Jess Bartlet have released their XY EP imbued with all the ‘80s nordic dream-pop vibes that fans of Treasureseason have come to know and love. In our chosen track, ‘Blurred Edges’, the electronic keys and drum machine transport us to a golden era of synths, with Powell’s modern, glossy production and Bartlet’s swoon-worthy vocals reminding us of fellow retro-lovers Yumi Zouma. This swaying formula sounds incredibly romantic, but don’t mistake this song’s good looks for a lack of depth, as once again the lyrics lead us down an unexpected path. Bartlet told us over email that “Blurred Edges was lyrically inspired by the uncertainty of making a decision based purely on emotion, and ignoring evidence etc. It's actually quite political (leaving the EU), but I'm not sure how much detail you want to go into here and it's nice that different people take different meanings I guess. It is however, quite fitting because it is Donald Trump's inauguration today! Sonically it's most similar to our previous EP Julep. It's a good medium between Exhale and The Rush on XY.” It seems that we just can’t get away from politically-charged music at the moment, but if it sounds as good as Treasureseaon’s ‘Blurred Edges’, why would we want to? - HT
