TOR MILLER FRIENDS WITH YOU

‘Friends With You’ marks a pivotal moment in a friendship, when one confesses their closely-kept love for the other and therefore a choice has to be made. For this reason, Tor Miller’s latest single is full of urgency; a surge of emotion flooding into the friendzone. It’s clearly an unrelenting feeling, as reflected in the restless keys, choral backing vocals, retro-rock guitar slams, heavy drums and clanking metallic percussion. Somehow Miller has managed to incorporate the industrial, the organic, and the glamorous into this song, and all strung together with his powerful, resounding voice. Most likely this New York resident took notes from his idols Elton John, David Bowie and Billy Joel at the height of ‘80s pop and rock culture, and they too wrote about love in an agonising, all-consuming manner that we hear today from Tor Miller. There aren’t all too many young contemporary artists making music in this style, but Miller sits right at home with the drama of it all. - Hannah Thacker
