TOOTHLESS PARTY FOR TWO (FEAT. LIZ LAWRENCE)

‘Party For Two’ is another cut from Toothless’ (aka Ed Nash) first solo album, The Pace Of Passing, and it’s the second music video we’ve featured from the fantastic team of collaborators surrounding the project. In contrast to the highly surreal GIFs and infectious indie-pop of ‘Sisyphus’, the Louis Bhose-directed video is painfully real. It’s an exaggerated version of the everyday, where the central protagonist falls into patterns of self chastisement. It was a place of common struggle that inspired the video, as Bhose relays, "I wanted to make a video that reflected how the majority of my friends and I deal with self-improvement - one step forward, two steps back. [...] I feel like both Ed and I have experienced what it is to be out of ideas and out of shape and this was a very personal video for both of us - I can't applaud him enough for having the balls to go through with it." With Toothless’ music in particular, it’s sometimes easy to miss the deeper meaning because the left-leaning and uplifting melodies are just so bloody enjoyable, especially with ‘Party For Two’s dream-pop guitars and those flawless, wistful harmonies with Liz Lawrence. Here we have an example of a music video doing more than providing some pretty visuals for a track, it’s actually telling us something, teaching us something more about the song than we might not have glimpsed on our own. - HT
