In all likelihood you haven’t heard of the 24-year-old British singer, songwriter and producer Tommy, but you’ll find yourself unable to shake the impact of this little-known artist’s single ‘Binary Love’. It’s a truly resplendent track; rich in ambiance that emanates from the twinkling guitars and the slow-jazz drums. The focal point of ‘Binary Love’ is easily the combination of gilded lyrics and Tommy’s baritone vocal which is sure to strike a chord at the heart of anyone listening. There’s something quite elemental about Tommy’s writing, just listen to lines like 'lost touch with life, / surrounded by nature, / digital war, / frozen still, / inside we whither'. What’s especially interesting is that this organic imagery, such as 'sunlight reflected in your eyes,' is used to parallel our intrinsic attachment towards technology. Is that really the effect of sunlight and sky, or is it the blue light of a phone or device screen? Tommy himself holds the answer: “Binary Love explores what it means to be human. We are losing the ability to communicate as technology consumes us”.
