STRONG ASIAN MOTHERS ALL I DO

Sounding like a Clarence Clarity, H09909 and Louis Jack hybrid, London-based trio Strong Asian Mothers launch into the darker side of their hip-hop alt-pop style with warped new single ‘All I Do’. Entering through the vortex of SAM’s ever-impressive experimentation, there are some similar tropes, such as the boisterous brass stabs and layers of synths usually performed by Amer Chadha-Patel, plus Josh Stadlen’s jazz-trained drum work. What’s different about ‘All I Do’ is the slightly slower tempo, which adds a suspense to those eerie electronics, and of course, there’s the various voice modulations which turns Kalim Patel’s singular perspective into demonic multiple personalities. This impact is reflected in Patel’s retelling of this song’s origin: "When writing the lyrics I had a recurring image in my head of someone alone in a flat, half losing their marbles. Of this person having a sense of being haunted, of having an excess of odd energy in them, of time passing by (badly spent), and, of course, taking regular trips to the kitchen sink for top ups from that tap." Throughout the surrealistic soundscape of ‘All I Do’, the band keep coming back to that action 'All I do is drink / all I do is drink, / tap water from the kitchen sink,' the repetition of the line becoming more exaggerated and more haunted each time. This track marks an evolution in Strong Asian Mother’s self-tailored sound, one that keeps the best bits from before while adding in new elements to test the listener’s limits as this band becomes even more daring. - Hannah Thacker
