SAKIMA HOLY WATER

Earlier this year, the influential producer/songwriter SAKIMA became part of the TMR database through his bold single ‘Death Is In The Air’, which gave the brave perspective of homosexual men who lived through the years of the HIV and AIDS crisis. Keeping up the unfiltered, uncensored LGBTQ+ narrative that’s central to SAKIMA’s music, the UK-based artist has returned with his authentically original electronic production blending left-field pop and R&B influences throughout new single ‘Holy Water’. The song is an unconventional love letter to himself; on the surface it sounds like SAKIMA is setting down the law at the start of a new relationship 'If you make me love you like I think you are, then boy, I’m fucking sacred, better treat me like I’m holy water'. However, as the producer’s own words illuminate, his declarations aren’t quite so predictable… “It’s only this year -- 2018 -- where I truly learned to love myself and accept my emotions as something that’s real and valid and that they should never be used against me. At first loving yourself feels like a forced smile, but after awhile you start to see the subtle beauty in the things you’d been conditioned to hate about yourself." ‘Holy Water’ is a glitchy, reverb-soaked, trap-heavy electronic homage to self-love and self-worth, and it’s something we can all learn from. Look out for SAKIMA’s upcoming debut album, Project Peach. - Hannah Thacker
