With ‘Street Fighter’, rei brown (fka raybaboon) contributes to the blurred world where music and computer games cross. We’ve seen artists like Grimes portray the gamer girl character in the music video ‘Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream’, Kyyn took inspiration from a minimalistic online game called Dark Room for her single ‘Stay Lit’, Skott based newest release ‘Remain’ on game soundtrack composition and here rei brown pays homage to the first female character on Street Fighter, Chun-Li. Throughout ‘Street Fighter’, the Japanese artist paints an idyllic story of meeting a girl at the arcade, which leads to romance: whether real or imagined isn't clear. The relationship is held in a hazy web of longing vocals, silky electronics and a retro-leaning rhythmic guitar. Repeating the tempting invitation, “stay in bed,” rei brown has constructed a spectral dream world, one that we hope he continues to expand alongside other releases ‘Afraid’ and ‘wouldnt it be great’. - HT
