It is with great pleasure we make something of a left-turn for TMR, delving into the avant-garde to premiere Berlin-based techno producer Paul Camillo Rachel aka Aparde’s truly gorgeous ambient-techno remix of German electro-pop duo Yukno’s 2017 belter ‘Hund’. Aparde is known in certain circles for a distinctive, atmospheric and emotionally stirring production style, and never has this been more apparent than on his remix of ‘Hund’ in which propulsive rhythms and deconstructed vocals weave together in a warm, organic and thoroughly arresting blend. Speaking of the remix himself, Aparde has stated, “When I got the request from Yukno, I was excited and interested, because I’ve never remixed a song from a German-speaking band before. I’ve tried to catch the atmospheric aspects of the song and used a lot of audio cuts to make layers and rhythmic patterns. The remix sounds floating, fluttering and busy. The last thing I added was the vocals, which I used as pads and rhythmical cuts. I finished the remix with an understated and pitched vocal phrase on top to suggest the original theme as subtle as possible.” It may be subtle, but it’s also sublime. -Karl Jawara
