THE MOTION SLEEP TALK

Today, we’re proud to premiere the latest single from non-binary songwriter, engineer and producer Penny Churchill - aka The Motion. With traits of dream-pop and experimental electronics, ‘Sleep Talk’ is a raw, emotionally driven track which continuously flips the script from creeping unease to melodious understanding to stripped-back honesty. The song represents contrasting emotions of freedom and entrapment, while exploring themes of isolation and insomnia. At its core, Churchill’s lyrics are profound and true: 'Sometimes you have to say, / What’s on your mind anyway, / You’re just a baby boy, / Stealing my love right now.' We’re completely swept up into this glitchy, DIY dreamscape with its various layers of deep emotional unrest, which Churchill describes as “the mood of being stuck in a cyclical rut of routine.” Going into more detail, they say: “The verses are slow and sonically dark, whereas the chorus is directly contrasting with a warm, surreal feeling. This makes me feel as though, for a moment, I am elsewhere, somewhere with a more free and organic atmosphere in momentary bliss.” ‘Sleep Talk’ is complimented by a lyric video directed by Anxious Film Club, true to The Motion’s escapist alter-world aesthetic. - Hannah Thacker
