NICK MURPHY FORGET ABOUT ME

When Nick Murphy, the artist formerly known as Chet Faker, releases songs called ‘Forget About Me’ and ‘Bye’, there’s a small pang of fear that this is a farewell, especially with his track record of sudden hiatus, teaser songs and so on. However, Murphy has also shown up with a further two tracks ‘I’m Ready’ and the riotous rumba ‘Weak Education’, that has us hoping that the Aussie is sticking around. Collectively, these four tracks sound more like a Nick Murphy DJ set than an EP, but one track in particular has caught our ear. Coming in at six minutes forty-six, ‘Forget About Me’ is a continuous trip. In the opening minute we’re called forward to Murphy’s sermon with a high-pitched chant, prayer bell and an organically emerging orchestra. Suddenly, we’re thrown into an addictive dance rhythm, the bass coming in heavy with trickling synths drenching the backdrop. Every now and then, the strings come back in swells, adding real drama to the Todd Terje-esque electronic arrangement. The remnant of Chet Faker that remains is Murphy’s distinct growl, which comes in strong over the dizzying instrumentation, almost sounding like an epic battle between rock-leaning guitars and club-bound beats. As we traverse through the sustained conclusion of ‘Forget About Me’, the two world collide with ferocious brilliance. - HT
