Nemi Alves is the latest red-haired sensation on the UK alt. pop scene. Hailing from south London, her first single ‘What You Gonna Do’ is characterised by abrasive synth stabs, experimental production and the goading question ‘nobody knows you like I know you / What you gonna do?’. What’s more impressive than what’s in ‘What You Gonna Do’ is what is left out – the track feels gorgeously minimal, which gives Nemi’s heavenly vocal room to shine. The result feels almost grungy, but leaves you in no doubt that Nemi is capable of producing captivating alternative pop. -HM
