LUNCH LADIES LOVE IS OVERRATED

The title of Lunch Ladies’ second release from their upcoming debut album, Down On Sunset Strip, is very suiting to a week that has given us so many love songs, but rather than attacking or celebrating the institution of Valentine’s, this New Jersey band go at the very idea of love itself. With its unexpectedly long introduction, ‘Love Is Overrated’, is sure to catch the keen ear of surf rock, dream pop or shoegaze lovers, but if those genres aren’t your usual bag, well it's really quite hard to resist getting into the groove of that chunky bass. It’s a totally charming track; theremin-esque synths and Beach Boys drums swirl around Cynthia Rittenbach’s matter-of-fact refrain, “love is overrated and I’m happy in my room.” That’s the kind of introverted, lo-fi jangle-pop honesty we’ve been missing this week. - HT
