LULLY SANS CHAPEAU

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the mysterious Lully follows up her heavy-weight debut ‘Slow D’s’ (a name of which we still haven’t figured out the meaning) with another interestingly named super hit ‘Sans Chapeau’. For the non-French speakers out there, the track title translates to “without a hat” or “hatless”, perhaps further tribute to her moniker inspiration Jean-Baptiste Lully, the 17th-century French baroque composer, instrumentalist, dancer and courtier. That’s pretty much where our history lesson will stop as the music of modern Lully is outrightly present and looking forward. Her sophomore single opens with the erotic glitchy electronics familiar from the debut, but then a pitched-down vocal reminiscent of Låpsley’s early work or Morly enters the field, wielding an amorous croon and apologetic words. The bombastic synth keys and percussion in the chorus demonstrate Lully’s pop tenacity, but she keeps things interesting and on the edge of weird with those futuristic electronics. - HT
