Brooklynite Xan Young is just one of a handful of new producers whose sensitive, complicated electro-soul feels indebted to legendary XL recluse Jai Paul. The trademarks of Jai's revolutionary style are apparent on Xan's debut tune, 'Passion', but this newcomer does carve out his own niche with an otherworldly falsetto to compliment those wobbly, woozy synths, vibrating beats and scattershot samples. As far as debuts go, this is about as ambitious, and oddly infectious, as it gets. All eyes will be on Xan's next move; expect him to ace it. - DC
