WHITE KITE PAST LIFE

Lovers of eclectic acts like Tora and Goldwash, you’ll very much dig the indie-disco textures of White Kite’s newest trip ‘Past Life’. For their latest release, the East London trio (Louis Shadwick, Tom Dunning and Will Dunning) step out with moody bass grooves, retrograde rhythms and buoyant string flourishes for an initial verse that’s brooding and bluesy. We could take in a whole song of these rich textures, but - less than a minute in - the band launch into kaleidoscopic disco for a dance-inducing chorus that’s both contrasting and complementary to those more introverted verses. A particular moment of throwback glory happens at 2:23 for a sweeping, ‘90s-era dance interlude which could very well have the listener throwing their hands in the air, eyes closed, dipping into or letting go of memories of their own past. As the songwriter behind ‘Past Life’, vocalist Shadwick explains the personal meaning behind ‘Past Life’, which is “about my experience of growing up having to hide what I was, and how that makes you feel like you have to lead of double life. You constantly have to reconcile a sense of shame and abnormality with the excitement and liberation of finding people and places where you can express yourself and not be judged.” - HT
