VON SELL SCENE OF A CRIME

Earlier this year, Brooklyn-based producer David Von Sell had to take an unplanned medical break from music due to unexplained vocal cord discomfort, and over the months - as Von Sell rested at his family home in Hamburg - he began to unpack the issues behind this physical symptom. The single artwork brings a visual representation of Von Sell’s inward analysis, as we see a blindfolded illustration of someone who we can assume to be the artist, his being almost touched by unseen hands. That’s how anxiety works - it creeps up on you when you’re not paying attention to your environment, your self-care, the people you allow into your life. It took the extreme action of reclusion in order to bring Von Sell back to himself and unwittingly to open up a new creative vent. Speaking about his comeback single ‘Scene Of A Crime’, Von Sell explains: “I ended up writing a song about being in love, yet being numb at the same time. A song that makes you dance but perhaps also reflect. I think I explore pretty much every fear I have here, of not being loved, of not being able to feel, of feeling too much…” Although fuelled by fear, this track is a bold electro-pop mover that uses driving synths, layered vocals, disco rhythms and complimentary acoustic and synthetic elements that create this rich, uplifting tapestry of sound. As T. S. Eliot once famously stated, “anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity.” - Hannah Thacker
