VAULTS HUNGER OF THE PINE (ALT-J COVER)

In their handful of live dates thus far, London trio Vaults have performed with a string section and pianist, adding a solemn wash of grandiose, pining emotion to their already deeply-cathartic compositions. The band have now applied that same formula to this otherworldly cover of Alt-J's 'Hunger of the Pine'.

One glaring symptom of Alt-J's return has been the unusual tepidity of their world, post-An Awesome Wave - some of the unbridled dynamism that rocketed tracks like 'Breezeblocks' and 'Tesselate' into the mainstream consciousness has ebbed away, and there's little-to-no human heart or heft in its place either. Enter Vaults's classicist re-imagining: all jangling bells, distant thundercracks of percussion and aching twinges of violin, enveloping lead vocalist Blythe Pepino's lingering purrs and sending a dark, treacly shot of indie-cinematica coursing through the original's spindly veins.
