THYLA CANDY

On our radar this week is alternative-rock outfit THYLA, who recently released a super-crunchy sweet treat with their rattling indie tune ‘Candy’. Fronted by the endearing vocals of Millie Duthie, supported by three fellow musicians Mitch Duce, Dan Hole and Danny Southwell, this track is brilliantly slacker-esque rock and juvenile angst at it’s best. Centred around everyday anxiety that induces dreams of your teeth falling out (we’ve all been there), ‘Candy’ ups the ante from passive atmospherics to desperate pleas to “get her away from me!” It’s all set off with distorted guitars, thunderous rhythms and dynamic melodies that keep the band’s sound lifted from the murky depths of these overwhelming emotions. Listening to ‘Candy’ to you can practically smell the stale beer and feel the worn, unnervingly sticky carpets of the pubs and basement bars where DIY bands flourish, as you often find in a place like Brighton - where this four currently call home. - Hannah Thacker
