SWEAT WHAT MEN WANT

Revitalised from their hibernation period, South London's exceptional sleazy poppers Sweat have made a triumphant return with their first single since 2016 'What Men Want'. Having kept themselves busy with core members Dante and Gam Traynor contributing songwriting and production duties on Fat White Family's latest album Serfs Up! as well as somewhat slyly releasing the wonderful 'Sentimental Sunset' under their Xi moniker earlier this year, 'What Men Want' is a powerful proclamation from a band that are here to stay. Opening with a set of squelching synth-bass notes set behind Dante's hard, auto-tuned vocals, digital drums add tempo to the lyric-lead verse before escalating into a dramatic pre-chorus. Hitting after a mere 45 seconds, the self-aware hook "I am a man and I understand what men want" makes its first euphoric appearance, setting the tone for a dance floor filling attack on toxic masculinity. Dante explains: “What Men Want aims to expose some of the ridiculousness of masculinity and patriarchal hierarchies, and shows a dystopia driven by corrupt men pleasing each other to get to the top. It came from a nightmare I had on NYE 2017 but I don’t want it to be all doom and gloom – ridicule seems to be a good strategy to start to neutralize the deep-rooted male archetype that causes such harm to everything it comes into contact with. All men are complicit in perpetuating harmful masculine mythology to an extent, and it takes a lot of time, maturity and constant vigilance to condition ourselves out of it, if we even manage to…”-Holly Mullineaux
