SUGARCANE SHAMBALA MESS

With a title playing on the famous sweeter-than-sweet dessert Eton Mess, new band Sugarcane step to the fore with their own version, ‘Shamala Mess’. Set up by Robin French, a musician of dual-heritage who grew up experiencing British and Carribean culture, the project combines vintage bossa nova and calypso for a modern day audience. On this single, we hear a raucous collusion of Bahian drumming, French chansons, Trinidadian steel pan, and British indie. There’s something extremely nostalgic about ‘Sambala Mess’, perhaps it’s the departure from digitally manufacture sound, the organic composition, or the flowy vocal harmonies. - Hannah Thacker
