SUDAN ARCHIVES GLORIOUS

Experimental R&B fiddle player Sudan Archives has just dropped a second single 'Glorious' from her upcoming debut album ATHENA. 'Glorious' uses a strong folk melody, almost like a nursery rhyme. It's a simple and reserved harmonised vocal from Sudan Archives which is paired with a fiddle line, which mirrors the vocal melody. The percussion feels archaic, with bongos and clanging symbols and bells, especially against the modern squelchy synth bass. 'Glorious' also features a punchy verse from rapper D-Eight, who speaks of his struggle tied to race: "The white man ain't tryna pay me proper, I’m trying to get a ring for my baby momma, In a world for my daughter, my son, here for the flowers." In the video, Archives’ pet snake makes an appearance to serve as a “visual theme” for the project. "He’s so sweet and cute, and he doesn’t want to hurt anybody", the artist says in a press release. "But everyone is afraid of him. I deal with that – men have told me, ‘You look intimidating’. Or someone will be like, ‘Smile!’ But I’m totally non-intimidating when you get to know me, I’m actually shy". 'Glorious' is an exciting addition to Sudan Archive's growing body of work and ATHENA will arrive on the 1st of November. She will also be playing at Rough Trade East on the 18th of November and Corsica Studios on the 19th. -Ellie Rose-Davies
