SPILT MILK SOCIETY ORANGE

Not too long ago we introduced you to Strawberry Milkshake, the solo project of Liverpool musician Harry Handford, via a premiere of his single ‘Big Stacked Steve’, and then followed up with ‘Sirens’. Off-shooting from Strawberry Milkshake is Handford’s band Spilt Milk Society. Their first single ‘Orange’ offers up a multitude of dystopian references such as Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange and its drug-laced Korova Milk Bar, or George Orwell’s 1984 with the ominous Big Brother. All of this is rolled into a romantic indie-pop jaunt that sounds like a mixture between ‘00s Bombay Bicycle Club, fellow Liverpudlians Her’s and a fatigued Bad Sounds. Composed of a luscious bass line, sparkling chimes, bouncing percussion, and a serious hook of a chorus, we’re invited into Spilt Milk Society’s brooding nostalgia and we’d quite like to stay there for a while. - Hannah Thacker
