SHABAKA BLACK MEDITATION

Prolific saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings finds time between leading Sons Of Kemet, the Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka And The Ancestors to focus on his new solo record Afrikan Culture. Due out on May 20th via Impulse! Records, and co-produced with Dilip Harris, the first single 'Black Meditation' is a gently drifting collection of woodwind voices and flowering flutes that slowly spring up around a solemn bass clarinets. Shabaka describes the upcoming EP by saying, "Afrikan Culture was made around the idea of meditation and what it means for me to still my own mind and accept the music which comes to the surface. It features various types of Shakuhachi flutes and a new technique of creating that I’ve been experimenting with in layering many flutes together to create a forest of sound where melodies and rhythms float in space and emerge in glimpses." A change of pace from the pulsating rhythms and soaring saxophone of his other projects, his solo venture is set to be a luscious and meditative affair. -Toby Evans-Jesra
