Managing to switch between endearing, disco-inflected pop, and surreptitious hip-hop with consummate ease, is 20-year old Toronto native, Saya. Her debut ‘Wet Dreams’ ebbs and flows in its verses, driven by throbbing, elegant synth lines, before erupting into an absolutely flawless, bubbly, modern-pop chorus. It’s an incredibly accomplished and likeable debut, mutating briefly in the bridge section into a potent hip-hop infused beast before smoothly drifting back into its seductive chorus. Complete with Blood Orange-indebted instrumentals, and an aesthetic to rival the coolest of the cool; from this first offering - you’d be hard pushed to say that this won’t be the start of a very fruitful year for Saya. -JC
