SAM JOHNSON TRIP ON GOLD

British singer-songwriter Sam Johnson continues his commentary of dissatisfaction perpetuated by today’s expectations, whether that be with the sameness of the music industry as we heard in ‘Medicine For My Brain’ or the systematic process of app dating in newest track ‘Trip On Gold’. As Johnson shares, the single explores “the transient, casual nature of relationships,” and for him it’s not enough to have a “magpie love,” instead he would “rather go for gold.” In this way, the song is an uplifting one; it’s about not losing faith and celebrating what’s to come through the joyous chorus that brings together Johnson’s indie-folk songwriting and co-writer Iain Archer’s Irish flair. In fact, the whole song is a delightful mix of genres. After all, as poet William Cowper once wrote “variety is the spice of life,” and so look beyond the LED lights on your mobile phone screens to the opportunities in front of you. Surely, that’s the takeaway from Johnson’s radio-ready tune ‘Trip On Gold’. - Hannah Thacker
