ROCH KINTSUGI

The last time we heard from London's ROCH she was making a big impression with very minimal elements - snaking guitar hooks and gently vibrating pianos - on her debut song, 'Closer'. While we loved the feel of that track, there was almost something lacking, perhaps a bit of bulk and grittiness; whatever it was, ROCH seems to have addressed our niggling concerns on her more rounded second cut, 'Kintsugi'. The title comes from the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery (and also probably/possibly the recent Death Cab album of the same name), which is pretty apt, given that lyrically ROCH points to a feeling of estrangement throughout. The key to 'Kintsugi' however, is ROCH's perfect juxtapositions, while her willowy incantations give the impression of faint lachrymosity, the melody itself is a powerful, warming embrace - all softly picked guitars and tactile percussion. - DC
