REMI MILES VELVET SUMMER

Remi Miles is one of those artists who has truly been shaped by his environment. Now based in Brighton, Miles began his life in the American state of Virginia where his first introduction to music was the music his parents played around the house, from afrobeat to pop, rock n roll to soul, and all stops in-between. He notes Marvin Gaye, Colin Blunstone, Fela Kuti, The Doors and Bob Dylan as personal favourites, from who he took cues for skilful songwriting, lyrics and melodies. The influences came to life in Brighton’s bohemian music scene - as Miles states: “I've always found freedom, inspiration and curiosity within the nightlife of cities. There is always something new to learn, new adventures to be had, fascinating people to meet and deep conversations to get lost in.” With introductions out the way, let’s talk about his new single ‘Velvet Summer’, which boldly begins with steadily-paced piano chords before Miles’ soft-to-the-touch voice comes in at just above a whisper. Throughout the song, the instrumentation remains fairly minimal, but this is possibly why ‘Velvet Summer’ has such a powerful and mysterious feel. It’s an understated ballad in which this emerging artist confesses his love with genuine feeling and a promising presence. - Hannah Thacker
