REFS CRYING

Looking back on the songs we’ve covered from New York duo REFS so far, it’s clear that emotion is a potent fuel for their songwriting. Following the double-edged retrospective that is ‘Stories’, ‘Crying’ is a song that explores the pain of a heart in turmoil, but also the irony that no one but oneself can be held accountable for this pain. REFS introduce the track with this same observation, “In relationships, we are responsible for setting our own boundaries, and more importantly, holding steadfast once they've been crossed. It's often our own inaction that turns the knife". It’s this self-analysis that holds up each soulful line of ‘Crying’, as sung by Rich Saunders. This personal awakening is reflected by the daydreamy production of Zach Lipkins, who plays with tempo and space to reflect the points when our thoughts may turn more frantic in search of answers and other time when our mind accepts the origin of these feelings and is at peace. It’s once again this undeniable chemistry between Saunders and Lipkins which brings REFS’ storytelling to life. - Hannah Thacker
