RALPH TABLES HAVE TURNED

Raffa Weyman, aka RALPH, is continuing her pop reign with dance-inducing new single ‘Tables Have Turned’. An intoxicating blend of contemporary pop, 90s vocal effects and 70s funk, this is a sweet and snappy take on disco, showing that this Canadian artist can put her hand to any genre and leave it with an official RALPH stamp. The upbeat, romantic vibes of ‘Tables Have Turned’ may mislead the listener for a short while, but on closer inspection, the lyrics tell us everything we need to know. They deal with the anxiety of feeling on the back-foot in an uneven relationship. RALPH confesses to herself that she “can’t handle the space, need you here by my side”, resulting in fretted insomnia, “I’m up all night, picturing you acting like a fool”, and falling into a trap of saying “I guess I’m the needy one.” In the era of female empowerment, it’s not easy to admit these feelings, but surely it’s reassuring to those of all genders to hear that you’re not alone in these emotions and if all else fails, you can turn them into an dazzling disco-pop track. - Hannah Thacker
