PRINCESS NOKIA SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA

Following her ground-breaking 1992 album back in 2017 and subsequent Metallic Butterfly last year, Princess Nokia is back once again with pop-laced put down and pull up ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea’, otherwise titled ‘S.H.I.T.’ As ever, her lyrics zing with attitude. Even the cover art exudes confidence, letting you know that the Princess is here to take the crown home. The track, which is backed by bouncing rhythms, chopped gospel vocals and playful trumpet, touches on a range of topics from pride in Puerto Rican-American identity, hatred for domestic and gun violence, creating music for the love of it rather than the fame or money, toxic relationships formed across social media, and even a nod to Lizzo’s life affirming ‘Juice’. All of this context and more centres around a catchy-as-hell chorus, “sugar honey iced tea, / These bitches don’t like me, / Theses bitches want to fight me, / And doing shit just to spite me.” While Princess Nokia could verge on anti-women sentiment in this chorus, her point has already been made by her stating that if these haters put their energy into something else, they could be happier, as well as out right saying “I don’t be fighting no women.” It’s not about woman-versus-woman here, it’s about cutting the S.H.I.T. and supporting instead of hating on one another. - Hannah Thacker
