POETIC THRUST NEO NYC

Following on from their TMR debut ‘PSA’, the Poetic Thrust collective pay homage to their city with ‘Neo NYC’. Placing themselves somewhere between BADBADNOTGOOD, Anderson.Paak and Thundercat; this seven-piece outfit is like Brockhampton’s jazz-infused cousin when it comes to their collaborative approach in utilising the talents of two rappers, two brass players, and a live rhythm section. Opening with Pink Panther-worthy bass creep, ‘Neo NYC’ is organic, modern jazz from the very start. The first verse is one of brooding nostalgia, a longing for simpler, more sentimental times. Then, the second verse swoops in with running rap thoughts and subtle hints to blockbuster entertainment as a parallel for reality, whether that’s carrying a flag for the fellowship, being icy as white walkers, holding on to that Philosopher’s stone, or acting like the sensei of many Americanised martial arts films. The vibrant, earnest energy of the rapper and the singer’s soulful chorus contrasts to the easy-going vibe that the rest of the band delivers in foot-tapping, head-bopping harmony. Once again, Poetic Thrust tick all the right boxes. - Hannah Thacker
