PETRINA FITZPATRICK COLOURS

‘Colours’ kicks off in the way most ukulele-led singer-songwriter tunes do; simple chords with a delicate vocal above. Out of no-where, Petrina Fitzpatrick turns the genre on its head, merging haunting vocal melodies and unexpected rhythms with a folky, jazzy feel provided by a new texture. She isn’t afraid to experiment with unnatural sounds either, throwing in a few edited vocal samples here and there for good measure, while letting a keyboard take the focus from the stringed instruments halfway through. The funky keyboard-led outro couldn’t sound more different to the ukulele from the opening seconds, and it works perfectly. Giving the important discussion of mental health such a progressive, genre-defying accompaniment seems to be the perfect way to approach the topic. - Dan Peeke
