OTTA NEAR ENOUGH A WOMAN

Following the moreishly breathy and wonderfully organic ‘Small Hours’, British-Finnish artist otta shares ‘Near Enough A Woman’ with an intimate stop-motion video. The song is built on elements of electronic pop, UK jazz, RnB, and neo-soul, although the canvas isn’t overcrowded, rather it’s poised with simple creative expression and burst of unexpected experimentalism. In this way, it reflects the seemingly calm yet chaotic nature of being in your early 20s. It’s a limbo place of sorts that otta candidly portrays with her smokey voice, “I look back on my younger self with jealousy, / My naivety, / ‘Cause now things aren’t so easy,  / They’re not easy.” Despite handling heavier subjects, the artist’s playful approach to songwriting and song construction provides some brevity “even though it’s hard.” Look out for ‘Near Enough A Woman’ and ‘Small Hours’ on otta’s upcoming debut EP, after it all blew over, via Warp Records on January 24th. - Hannah Thacker   [Photo credit: Lara Laeverenz]
