OKAY KAYA IUD

There’s plenty of reasons why a new song from Norwegian singer-songwriter Okay Kaya would stand out. It could be her honest songwriting, effective vocal delivery, lofi recording or melodies that appeared to have travelled here from a not-so-far-away past. All of this and more can be said of her latest single ‘IUD’, but as the title suggests, it’s much rather the content that will be turning heads this time around. The female physicality, sexuality, biology has become more of a talking point across music, but it’s not often that female contraceptives are the focus. In fact, we can’t think of a single other song that shares this theme. It’s one that Okay Kaya sings about frankly in ‘IUD’, with that velveteen vocal backed by simple percussion and a woozy guitar that steps up the octave scale along with the surprisingly catchy refrain “baby, you’re so baby, but I don’t want your baby.” It’s a song you won’t forget anytime soon, and once you’ve gotten past the mild shock of lyrics about sex, ejaculation, planned parenthood and IUDs, well, you’ll probably fall in love with this alternative gem. - HT
