‘Counterfeit’ is the second single from Countdown To Midnight, a compilation tape by 119 Productions, a collective dedicated to bringing together the finest artistic talent in Chicago. This trait is exemplified in ‘Counterfeit’, which features long time collaborators Noname and Saba, with the exciting addition of Chelsea Reject and Phoelix. Having exploded onto the scene with ‘Telefone’, Noname is fast creating a loud a buzz this side of the pond as in her native Chicago, with three sold out London shows within the last month. The young rapper cut her teeth as a slam poet, and as such her style is lyrical, smooth and very characterful. Her relaxed vocals complement Chelsea’s pacey delivery perfectly, with Saba and Phoelix providing some choice cuts as well as jazzy, understated production. The final single from this project is due to drop before the year is out, and with features as exciting as ‘Counterfeit’, it’s well worth keeping an eye out for. - HM
